Chennai: The Madras high court has upheld the detention of Pat t a l i M a k k a l K at ch i (PMK) leader Kaduvetti J Guru under the National Security Act, saying he had not denied having delivered a speech which was “abnormal, inflammatory, fuelling and inciting passions.” Dismissing a habeas corpus petition filed by the detained leader on Tuesday, a division bench comprising justice Elipe Dharma Rao and justice S Tamilvanan said: “Guru was always playing tricks on the law implementing agency to avoid his arrest,” adding “he has not at all denied his participation and even the contents of the speech published in various newspapers on January 7, 2008.” Guru was first arrested on July 6, 2008, and later detained under the NSA on July 10. The judges, upholding his detention, said there was no illegality or irregularity in his arrest, first in connection with a case registered by the Ariyalur police and later for a case registered in Meensurrutti police station. The order contended that Guru’s order let loose a wave of terror of greater intensity and magnitude, putting in peril the even tempo of the public. “He posed a threat to the unity and integrity of the country by resorting to caste politics and asking the people who attended the meeting to wage a war against fellow countrymen, including a union minister and a member of the legislative assembly, with a view to destabilise national peace and security.”
