A meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to the Ministry of Law & Justice was held here today under the chairmanship of Shri Salman Khurshid, Minister of Law & Justice. The item for discussion was ‘ The Legal Aid Programme’. Besides the Members of the Committee and senior officers of the Ministry of Law & Justice, the Member-Secretary of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) was also present and gave the details of the national legal aid programme. The meeting was informed that during 2008 a total number of 3,92,088 needy people were provided with free legal aid; during 2009 this number grew to 4,14,795 and during 2010 the number further increased to 5,37,203. During the current year 2011 a total of 5,16,668 needy people have been provided with free legal aid till June. 

The Members of the Committee expressed the view that more awareness should be created about the free legal aid programme and local Member of Parliament should also be involved in the implementation of the programme.
