The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) from across states to deliberate upon and propose strategies for reducing road fatalities and to suggest actionable measures for implementation. On the basis of recommendations of the GoM, Ministry introduced the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Parliament (Lok Sabha) on 9th August, 2016 for consideration and passing. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2017 passed by Lok Sabha on 10th April, 2017 and presently in Rajya Sabha for consideration and passing, inter-alia, proposeshikes in compensation for third party insurance cover, compensation in case of hit and run cases, scheme for the treatment of victims during the Golden hour and various clauses which will promote speedy disposal of long pending accident cases.
