SC directs Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind to file fresh affidavits The Supreme Court today directed Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind and Arshad Madani to file fresh affidavits stating therein that review petition pending in Allahabad High Court has been withdrawn by them. Maulana Asad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, died in February 2007 and his son Arshad Madani became the new president of the organisation which has the power and authority to issue fatwas to the Muslim community on religious issues. Rival group headed by Hazrat Maulana Qari Syed Mohammed Usman filed a civil suit before Civil Judge Lucknow seeking directions to Arshad Madani group not to interfere in the affairs of the organisation. The civil judge had issued the direction without hearing Madani group, who was not even made a party in the suit. The High Court also disposed off the petition of Arshad Madani on April 19, 2008 without granting any relief. Earlier, senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi. appearing for the petitioner, told a vacation bench comprising Justices C K Thakkar and Lokeshwar Singh Panta that the organisation was formed in 1919 and has about one crore members belonging to Muslim community and is governed by its own constitution.
