SC Judge Navin Sinha Retires

Early Life 

  • Justice Navin Sinha completed his law degree at Delhi University and practiced in the Patna Courts.
  • He was elevated to the position of judge at the Patna High Court after 23 years of practice.
  • He also served as the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court and Rajasthan High Court.
  • He was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court in the year 2017.

Life as Supreme Court Judge 

  • He has passed 126 judgements with 31.5 as an average number of judgements per year as a judge of the Supreme Court.
  • He passed majority of the judgements in criminal matters but he has dealt with cases of service, property law, civil law, etc.
  • He practiced as a criminal lawyer, civil lawyer and also in constitutional cases, however only gave his judgement in one matter related to the Constitution.
  • He had authored 27 out of 158 judgements he was part of, in his first year as a Supreme Court judge.
  • 2019 is considered as his busiest year as he authored 44 out of 133 judgments.
  • He has disposed of more than 13,000 cases during his tenure as a Supreme Court judge.

Justice Navin Sinha’s Speech 

  • He emphasised on the training requirements for the young lawyers.
  • He stated that “today’s lawyers would be tomorrow’s judges” and considering the competition, they should be trained accordingly.
  • He urged the Supreme Court Bar Association to take action and teach the young lawyers the manners and demeanour of being a lawyer.

CJI’s Speech 

  • The CJI in his speech stated that giving a judgement is much more than knowledge and application of the principles of law.
  • It is a matter of moral courage to make a decision that would displease many people.
  • It is very difficult make an unbiased decision being impartial.
  • He stated that “the SC is losing a very important voice” on the occasion of Justice Navin’s retirement.
