SC permits CBI to question sitting HC Judges in Cash for Judges scam Making its intention clear not to tolerate increasing corruption in the judiciary, the Supreme Court has, for the first, permitted the CBI to interrogate or question the sitting High Court judges whose names have cropped up in the cash-for-judges scam. Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan gave the CBI permission to go ahead and interrogate or question the sitting Punjab and Haryana High Court judges who have been named in the scam. The CBI got the permission after taking over the investigation of the scandal in which former additional advocate general of Haryana, Sanjeev Bansal is in jail for his alleged involvement in the delivery of Rs 15 lakh at the residence of Justice Nirmaljeet Kaur on August 13. Justice Kaur immediately called the police and also informed the Chief Justice of the State High Court Justice T S Thakur about the attempt of bribing her. Bansal had during the interrogation by the Central investigative agency reportedly confessed that he was a regular conduit between Justice Nirmal Yadav and New Delhi hotelier Ravinder Pal Singh. Justic Yadav had proceeded on leave following the disclosure made by Bansal that the money was actually meant for the former and it was taken to the residence of Justice Kaur by mistake. One property dealer, Rajeev Gupta, is also in jail, while hotelier Singh is absconding. Justice Balakrishnan has given the green light to the CBI to go ahead with an unfettered investigation into the scandal and has cleared the decks for personal interrogation of the High Court judges. This is the first instance in India where sitting High Court judges will be subjected to police interrogation. With this development, chances of a CBI investigation into the Ghaziabad GPF scandal, in which 36 judges have been named as beneficiaries, including a sitting Supreme Court judge and 11 judges of Allahabad and Uttarakhand High Courts, have also brightened.
