The Supreme Court has granted extension of time to the Centre to place before it the policy for regulating sale of firearms and granting arms licences. A Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam asked the Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam to place the documents relating to the government policy on the issue within three weeks. The court was hearing a PIL filed in September 2007 pointing out the alleged illegal sale of firearms and grant of licence for weapons without proper verification in Sri Ganganagar district bordering Pakistan. The petition filed by advocate Arvind Kumar Sharma had alleged that unchecked sale and issuance of arms licence was a cause of concern for the nation when terrorist activities were on the rise. The court had issued notices to both Home and Defence ministries and Rajasthan Government on the PIL which had sough CBI probe into such incidents. It was submitted that an enquiry for the period 2002-06 by the District Collector of Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan revealed sale of prohibited weapons obtained by the Army Personnel through Central Ordnance Depot Jabalpur
