Is it necessary to hand over the original possession letter?

Hello, we are selling our apartment here in Pune and after the buyer insisted on a possession letter from us, we got the same from the builder (we purchased the apartment from the builder). However, the society conveyance deed has not been done yet and the builder advised us not to hand over the original possession letter to the buyer. Any idea why is this and what would happen if we do hand it over to the buyer? Is there any future implication of handing over this document to the buyer on us as the seller?
