Adding wife's name in the property

Hi,

My husband brought a property last year in his name. However the home loan is in both of our names.

I am the co-borrower. As i am adding my earnings for the welfare for the family i would like to get the property registered in both of our names. My father-in-law says that per tradition properties should not be registered in wife's name, also Husband says that adding my name now would be very difficult so he dont want me to think about it. I am quite worried. My husband's salary goes for EMI and my savings goes for household expenses..when nothing left for me.

Could someone pls advice what is the procedure to add my name to the property ? Is that very difficult ?

Dear Padma,

Any alteration or modification to a deed can be made by way of rectification in the said deed. This can be done by applying before the district registration office where the property has been bought, stating clearly the reason for the same i.e addition of name. It is not that difficult process but will take some time. If required you can also attach a photo copy of the loan agreement, since it is taken on both of your names, this will smoothen the process.
