Where do you want to submit papers? Many want self attested, others accept certified copies by banks, local corporators, MLAs, gazetted officers ofcourse, senior police inspector in Maharashtra is a gazetted officer. Actually, it serves no purpose and is an archaic practice. Remember when there was no xerox, the whole document was copied down or typewritten. Most of the gazetted officers are very finicky when it comes to attesting the copies and think it below their dignity and thankless/worthless job.

Long ago, to obviate this necessity, one of my acquaintance, got a rubber stamp made of a gazetted officer and merrily crossed bridge of "attesting true copies". No body had time to cross check or doubt the veracity of the stamp.

LONG LIVE THE RUBBER STAMP IN INDIA. Let me narrate an interesting story.

In the days of Nizams of Hyderabad, people carried their prayers in written form. Urdu was the language used in Niamshahi. A lunatic got a rubber stamp from the garbage that read "Huzurwalla Khan Bahadur Shamsher Jung". He called those entering the court with an application and dutifully stamped the paper. In course of time, court officials became so enamoured, engrossed and taken up by the rubber stamp without reading it, that they refused to accept the application unless it carried the stamp.

JAO HO BUREACRACY AND FASCINATION FOR RUBBER STAMP.
