I wonder how you people get this kind of ideas of acid-testing, when it comes to lawyers in particular?

To test a lawyer you should become a lawyer only then you will be able to.  Statistical analysis is no good for testing a good lawyer. 

Whether any such database is available for any other profession?

Any person who wishes to achieve some thing in life should have a lawyer, chartered accountant and a doctor as  a personal friend - who will not look at you as a potential client.

Statistics / Track record alone cannot justify the credibility of an individual / profession,
