Is PIL effective in bringing about a social change?

Dear Friends,

Public Interest Litigation (‘PIL’) is a potent instrument in the hands of the spirited citizens of India against any wrong done to the public at large. Please share your opinion as to how effective is the tool of PIL in bringing about changes in society or are they as sacrosanct as they are made to be?

I am of the vie that PIL has done a great service to the Nation specially in the field of protection of our environment, Development, and human rights etc. But PIL needs to be properly regulated so that the system can serve the humanity in a better way and courts will have no occasion to say in future that PIL is a ‘publicity interest litigation’, ‘private interest litigation’, ‘politics interest litigation’ or ‘Paisa Income Litigation’ etc The same has been expressed by others also.
