Ladies and Gentlemen,
Sometimes even without ascertaining the historical facts about a politicianl, we start supporting the politician and raise him to a level of divinity of "Maha Atma" etc. Let us not ignore the facts that various individuals are raised to a level of larger than life for only political gains by some individuals. The best conspiracies in this world rarely get exposed during the period of their execution. I would like to mention the follwing facts about Mr. M. K. Gandhi and views of Dr. Ambedkar about him.
Due to Dr. Ambedkar's prominence and popular support amongst the untouchable community, he was invited to attend the Second Round Table Conference in London in 1932. Gandhi fiercely opposed separate electorate for untouchables, though he accepted separate electorate for all other minority groups such as Muslims and Sikhs When the British agreed with Ambedkar and announced the awarding of separate electorates, Gandhi began a fast-unto-death while imprisoned in the Yerwada Central Jail of Pune in 1932 against the separate electorate for untouchables only. Fearing a communal reprisal and killings of untouchables in the event of Gandhi's death, Dr. Ambedkar agreed under massive coercion from the supporters of Gandhi . This agreement, which saw Gandhi end his fast, while dropping the demand for separate electorates that was promised through the British Communal Award prior to Ambedkar's meeting with Gandhi. Dr. Ambedkar was to later criticise this fast of Gandhi as a gimmick to deny political rights to the untouchables and increase the coercion he had faced to give up the demand for separate electorates.
Dr. Ambedkar had condemned Mr. M. K. Gandhi's support for the caste system and perpetuating untouchability. Dr.Ambedkar warned people,"Don’t call Gandhi a saint. He is a seasoned politician. When everything else fails, Gandhi will resort to intrigue.” "Don’t fall under Gandhi’s spell, he’s not God... Mahatmas have come and Mahatmas have gone but untouchables have remained untouchables.”
In his book What Congress and Gandhi Have Done to the Untouchables, Dr. Ambedkar intensified his attacks on Gandhi and the Congress, hypocrisy.
“With the Hindus who have been blind devotees of Mr. Gandhi this study, although it is the first of its kind, will not find favour: indeed it is sure to provoke their wrath. How can it be otherwise when the conclusion arrived at is " Beware of Mr. Gandhi" ? Looking at it from a wider point of view, there is no reason for the Hindus to be enraged about it. The Untouchables are not the only community in India which thinks of Mr. Gandhi in these terms. The same view of Mr. Gandhi is entertained by the Muslims, the Sikhs and the Indian Christians. As a matter of fact, the Hindus should cogitate over the question and ask: why no community trusts Mr. Gandhi although he has been saying that he is the friend of the Muslims, Sikhs and the Scheduled Castes and what is the reason for this distrust ? In my judgment, there cannot be a greater tragedy for a leader to be distrusted by everybody as Mr. Gandhi is today.”
