The term Act is the short form of the word "Action". Act, in a legal sense, has various definitions. The most basic of those definitions is that an Act is any action or step taken by a person. For example, If X punches Y in the face, punching Y in the face is termed as X's "Act".

Another definition can be that an act is an official order that has legal force and has been passed by a legislature, for instance, a state legislature or the Indian parliament. In simple words, one can consider an act as a river that is induced with every fact or anything that has been said, done or agreed in legislation and later on merged into the wider sea of Law.

It is a legislative plan passed by any legislature that is referred to as a "bill" until it is adopted and later becomes law. An Act either makes new legislation or modifies an existing one.
