Abu Azmi out on bail within an hour of his arrest Wed, Feb 13 06:45 PM Mumbai: Samajwadi Party Mumbai unit chief and Rajya Sabha member Abu Asim Azmi, who was arrested by the Mumbai police from his residence at Colaba on Wednesday, was released less than a hour later after the Bhoiwada court granted him bail. Abu Asim Azmi had been arrested for making an inflammatory speech at a political rally in Shivaji Park on February 3. Azmi's statement was recorded by the police in the afternoon and later informed that he was being arrested. He was taken to the Bhoiwada court in Central Mumbai under tight security by the Shivaji Park police. The court granted him bail after he furnished a bond of Rs 10,000, his lawyer said. Coming out of the court, Azmi said he is a law-abiding citizen and he applied for bail as he doesn't want to take political mileage. He said he has full faith in the judiciary In the court, while the police had sought Azmi's custody, the magistrate granted him a judicial custody for 14 days upon which his lawyers moved a bail plea successfully, his lawyer AQ Usmani said. The media was not allowed inside the court room. The police had registered a case against him on February 10 at the Shivaji Park police station under IPC sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of places of birth, residence etc), 153 D (assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 117 (abetting the commission of any offence by the public).
