The Allahabad High Court held that no conscious and systematic efforts were being made for checking the proliferation of spurious drugs in Uttar Pradesh.

The High Court directed the Central and the state governments to give a clear indication as to how, apart from bringing out amendments to the law, they planned to take effective actions for controlling the menace of spurious drugs.

Passing the order on a criminal petition filed by Brahmajee, a division bench comprising Justices Amar Saran and S S Tiwari also directed the state government to ensure within two months about the manpower and infrastructure needed, including creating adequate number of laboratories to check the proliferation of spurious drugs in the state.

The court also directed the Centre and the state government to inform it on raids conducted and samples taken to effective identify the manufacturers or dealers of spurious drugs, as had been directed earlier.

The Court also expressed dissatisfaction with the state government not providing adequate funds for installation of computerised system in this regard.

It directed the state government to inform it about the time frame in which the computerised system, of which the plan has been submitted by NIC, would be operational.

The next hearing will be heard on March 5.
