RMC Auctions Three Shops For Tax Recovery 9 Feb 2009, 2238 hrs IST, TNN Text: RAJKOT: Officials of tax recovery department of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) have begun auctioning properties that have Rs 1 lakh or more overdue taxes. After auctioning five such shops last Friday, RMC officials auctioned three shops located on Ghee Kanta Road of the city on Monday. As it turned out, against a due tax of Rs 12 lakh only Rs 4.19 lakh could be recovered. Tax officer Sameer Dhaduk said, "Tribhovandas Chhantbar trust building on Ghee Kanta Road has a tax overdue of Rs 12 lakh. When repeated reminders went unheard, we had to auction three of its shops on Monday." One shop was purchased by a tenant for Rs 1.84 lakh, while another was taken for Rs 2.35 lakh. The third shop had no bidders. "We have still to recover Rs 8 lakh in taxes. Till we collect the entire amount, auctions will not stop," said Dhaduk adding that RMC will seal the building if the need arises. Explaining this tough measure, municipal commissioner Dinesh Brahmbhatt said: "We didn't want to take this step either, but when someone just doesn't want to pay the taxes, how else can it be recovered. We keep this auction process as the last resort." RMC's drive to recover taxes has started giving desired results as many property owners, who evaded tax payment on flimsy grounds, have started queuing up in front of the corporation's office.
