SC Restrains Demolition In Gomti Nagar: Sends Notices To UP Govt Dated : 28-02-2009 Source UNI Delhi : TEXT : The Supreme Court restrained the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh from carrying out further demolition in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar and its surrounding areas for the Chief Minister’s dream project. A bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi directed the state of UP not to carry out further demolition work after hearing senior counsel for the Gomti Nagar Jan Kalyan Mahasamiti Lucknow Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who contended that the government was grossly misusing and abusing the stay order passed by the apex court in May, 2008. The counsel further contended that the state government was carrying out extensive demolition of public and private properties with more vigour, vengeance and contumaciously demolishing prestigious buildings and converting parks and green belts into jungle of concrete eating away the lungs, which are essential for inhabitants of Lucknow. The petitioner alleged that the government was indulging in anti-public activities and indiscriminate demolitions reconstructions and conversions of parks into buildings in the name of development. The petitioner contended that if the hands of the Mayawati government were not tied till the final disposal of the transfer, the writ petitions shall become anfractuous. The dream project of Mayawati is spread over 101 acres of land and is being constructed with an estimated cost of over Rs 150 crore. Ten writ petitions were filed in the Allahabad High Court against the demolition of public and private buildings and total of 204 hectares of land, which has already been converted for the residential and commercial purposes vide government order dated August 20, 2003, was in violation of the Lucknow Development Authority rules.
