Government is mulling amending the National Commission for Women Act to give more powers to the body, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said amendment of NCW Act is under consideration. She, however, did not give further details about the amendments. She said NCW Chairperson Girja Vyas has been given an extension and the posts of four members falling vacant in May will be filled in due course. The Government, she said, will soon hold a roundtable conference of women's organisations and the associations of men who claim to be "victims" of anti-dowry laws. Men should not just remain the "problem" but become a part of the solution, she said. To a separate question, Chowdhury said 1.64 lakh cases of crimes against women were reported in the country in 2006 as against 1.55 lakh cases in the previous year. In 2006, 28,998 cases saw conviction of the accused and the cumulative number of cases pending trial (after including those of previous year) was 5.09 lakh, she said.
