HC rejects bail application of BSP MP Umakant Yadav The Allahabad High Court has rejected the bail application of BSP MP Umakant Yadav who has been booked under the Gangsters Act for alleged forcible occupation of land and illegally demolishing the structures constructed there. The order was passed by Justice Ashok Kumar Roopanwal who observed that there was "no new basis" for entertaining the bail application, which was the second by the Machhlishahar MP since his arrest in May last year. Yadav was arrested from outside Chief Minister Mayawati's residence last year, barely a few weeks after BSP assumed power in Uttar Pradesh, in connection with an FIR lodged in Phoolpur Police Station of Azamgarh district by one Firoz Ahmed who accused him of occupying the land on which his house was erected and also pulled down the structure. Government lawyer Meva Lal Shukla submitted before the court that Yadav had as many as 47 cases against him and that "witnesses either choose not to give any statement against him and if they do so, retract later. This shows that the petitioner has been trying to tamper with the evidences in the case".
