LAWYERS BOYCOTT COURT PROCEEDINGS

Madurai :

Wednesday,Jan 20 2010 IST

Alleging that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had targetted the legal profession in its recently filed chargesheet on the clash between lawyers and police in the Madras High Court Complex last year, the lawyers of Madurai District and Sessions Court boycotted the court proceedings, today. The functioning of various courts, including civil, criminal and other judicial fora was paralysed, following a days court boycott by about 1,000 lawyers. The agitating lawyers also demanded withdrawal of the chargesheet by the Central agency. It may be recalled that a bloody brawl had broke out between the police and lawyers in Madras High Court campus on February 19, last year, leaving several lawyers and police men injured. The CBI investigated into the clash on the directions from the High Court and filed chargesheet against 32 advocates and four police personnel, recommending departmental action against 22 police men. The CBI chargesheet had evoked protests from the lawyers.
