For the first time, the lawyers across the country including top legal eagles will come together to demand for a global legal framework to combat the challenges faced due to climate change. The Bar Association in India (BAI) is organising a two-day conference on "Climate Change and the role of Law" in the national capital beginning on Friday. "The legal fraternity in the country recognises the urgency with which the world community must act to mitigate and adapt to the risks and realities of climate change," BAI General Secretary Lalit Bashin told reporters. The conference is being organised in order to make recommendations to various nations and their respective governments and the global legal fraternity to take effective steps to circumvent this global issue, he said. The participants, at the conference, will also adopt "Delhi Declaration on Climate Change and the Role of Law" pledging to fill the role of "defenders of public interest and the rule of law." "There is a need to re-look into the existing laws. They have to be rationalised considering that presently many overlaps each other, thus giving the scope to the violators to get away with the offence," Priya Hingorani, treasurer of BAI, was referring to the allegations that lawyers were the ones who help corporates in gross environmental violations in the courts. Senior advocate Fali S Nariman, Delhi High Court Bar Association President K C Mittal, Vice President of the BAI R K P Shankardass and senior lawyers Ashok Desai and Anil Divan will be among those who will speak on the occasion.
