The Madras High Court directed the Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) to get instruction from the Chennai City Commissioner of Police (CoP) on a petition filed by journalists organisations seeking direction to file case against some film artistes for allegedly making derogatory remarks for the members of the Fourth Estate.
When the matter came up for hearing before Justice R Regupathy, APP N R Ilango submitted he had not received any instructions from the CoP.
The judge directed him to file reply before October 19, and posted the matter to the day for further hearing.
Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ), represented by its South Zone Secretary K Asuthulla and Chennai Union of Journalists represented by its President V Anbazhagan, submitted in their petitions the city police arrested Dinamalar Daily News Editor B Lenin on a complaint by South Indian Film Artistes Association (SIFAA) for a news item based on the arrest of actress Buvaneswari who was arrested by the police for allegedly being involved in flesh trade.
The two Journalist Organisations moved the Madras High Court seeking direction to CoP to take immediate action against the film actors, who made provocative speech against the journalists.
The SIFAA organised a meeting on October 7, and some film personalities made disparaging comments about journalists, causing great humiliation and mental agony to the members of Fourth Estate, the petitioners contended.
Even though the journalist organisations, office-bearers and hundreds of journalists presented a written complaint against the artiste, till now no action was taken by him, the petitioners contended.
The petitioners also sought a direction to the CoP to take appropriate action, register an FIR on the complaint and investigate the case and take appropriate action against the actors.
