The Madras High Court has flayed the Superintendent of the Puzhal Central Prison-II for not having complied with its direction asking the official to ensure medical attention for a double murder accused, who had multiple injuries on his body.

The matter relates to a habeas corpus petition filed by one G Balakrishnan, whose son B Dhanraj was arrested on April 30, in connection with the murder of a woman and her six-year-old son.

The father contended that his son was injured during interrogation and the prison doctor had recorded the injuries in jail records.

On May 14, a vacation bench of the Court directed the jail authorities to take Dhanraj to the Government Hospital with sufficient protection and examine him.

When the matter again came up for hearing yesterday before a regular division bench comprising Justices S J Mukhopadhaya and Raja Elango, the bench was incensed at the fact that Dhanraj was taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital for some abdominal pain. It then summoned the jail superintendent, S Rajendran, to be present in Court in the afternoon.

The judges sought to know whether the jail and hospital authorities were trying to shield police personnel who caused the injuries.

Posting the matter to June 22, the judges asked the jail authorities to produce Dhanraj before a medical board for examination.
