A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to State Governments pertaining to private and public college for providing relief, waive off, or moratorium on academic fees for the next semester and restrict them from asking lump sum amount from students. The petition states that, the same should be done regardless of whether the institution is public, private, aided or unaided.
The PIL also adds that, “...right to education can only have effective meaning if it is read as a right to continuous and uninterrupted education, the reality also remains that many students and parents are supporting their educational endeavors by educational or friendly loans, which further add to the burden."
On the account of the global pandemic, all schools and colleges have remained shut since March and there is a high possibility that they will continue to remain shut in the coming months. On April 29, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said that the academic sessions would begin from August for existing students and from September for new students, with admission processes commencing in August.
The petition is filed through the founder of the petitioner organization, Justice for Rights Foundation which is founded by Satyam Singh Rajput, with Advocate Amit Kumar Sharma and two law students, Prateek Sharma and Diksha Dadu.
