President Calls for Creating Adequate Awareness against acts of Violence and Attrocities against Women

The President calls for formally embracing our ancient civilizational values of treating women with respect and dignity to consider ourselves a civilized society. The President laid the foundation stone of Nirbhaya Bhawan, the new building for National Commission for Women (NCW), here today. Speaking on the occasion, he said that women have played and aspire to play a pivotal role in shaping the socio-political and economic development of our country. He stated that the National Commission for Women has been rendering their support for increased participation of women in the democratic processes and the general up-lift of women in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Krishna Tirath Minister of State for Women and Child Development said that the Government has taken various measures like Restructuring of Integrated Child Development Services scheme (ICDS), reservation for women in panchayats, etc for empowerment of women. But women face many challenges in our country and the violence against them is the biggest challenge which starts even before a girl is born. She said many rules, acts and laws have been made for protection of women but the society needs to move up and work together. On this occasion, she also highlighted the important role played by Non Governmental Organisation’s towards women empowerment.

Smt. Mamata Sharma , the NCW chairperson, emphasized on various efforts made by the National Commission for Women for gender sensitization. She said the ‘Mahila Adhikar Abhiyan’ has spread awareness about sexual harassment at workplace and through social networking socio-economic support is being provided to women even in the remote areas of the country. NCW Chairperson said programmes have been started with CRPF as well as Delhi Police for gender sensitization and the mindsets of the government, school and college students need to be changed.
