A compensation of Rs 60 lakh has been awarded to the parents of an accident victim by the Lok Adalat.
Chief Justice of the Madras High Court H L Gokhale yesterday, handed over the cheques totaling Rs 60 lakh to the parents of a person who died in a road accident at Ulundurpet in Villupuram district in January last year.
The motor vehicle accident case was settled through the Lok Adalat, organised by the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, Chennai, on June 2.
B Bhuvaneswari and B V Sharma of Kilpauk had filed a petition before the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal here that their son B V Kesav Sharma (31), who held a master’s degree in computer science in first class, was working in Answerthink Inc., Miami, Florida, US, and was earning Rs 48 lakh per annum.
On January 11, 2008, when he was returning from Sabarimala to Chennai by car after a pilgrimage, the vehicle overturned and fell on the roadside due to rash and negligent driving by the driver.
Kesav Sharma sustained grievous injuries and died on the way to PIMS Hospital, Kalapet, Puducherry.
The parents claimed a compensation of Rs 2.50 crore and the case was referred to the Lok Adalat.
T Mathivanan, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA), District Judge P T Loganathan and S Rajalakshmi, retired Judges, said in view of the compromise between the petitioners and the TATA AIG General Insurance Company Limited, the compensation amount was fixed at Rs 60 lakh, including interest and cost.
The insurance company was asked to issue two cheques, one for Rs 40 lakh in favour of Ms Bhuvaneswari and the other for Rs 20 lakh in favour of Mr Sharma.
Accordingly, the insurance company issued the cheques and the Chief Justice handed over the cheques to the victim’s parents.
