SC Asks Govt To Take Immediate Steps To Check Bangladeshi Migrants 1/16/2009 The Supreme Court directed the Centre to take immediate and adequate steps to check illegal migration of Bangladeshis and asked it to submit within eight weeks the status report on the pilot project under which Identity cards are being issued to every Indian citizen. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal also issued several directions to increase vigil at Indo-Bangladesh border to make it more secure. The apex court directed the Government to post adequate BSF personnel on the border and also expedite the ongoing fencing work on Indo-Bangladesh border. The Court also suggested to the Union Government to hold talks with appropriate authorities in Bangladesh for repatriating the illegal migrants, who have illegally entered into India, to Bangladesh. Counsel for the petitioner, NGO All India Lawyers Forum for Civil Liberties, had earlier alleged that there were about two crore illegal Bangladeshi migrants staying in the country. The court also directed the Union Government to take immediate steps to send back Bangladeshi migrants presently staying in transit camps. Earlier, the Supreme Court had reprimanded the Union Government for lacking political will in checking illegal Bangladeshi migrants, staying in Assam and had also blamed the politicians for indulging in vote bank politics by turning a blind eye to the problem of large-scale illegal migrants from Bangladesh entering the border state of Assam. Recently, there were reports that in Assam, natives of the state have been reduced to minority while illegal migrants have become majority and they are posing grave threat to the national security and integrity as these migrants are being used by terror outfits based in Bangladesh for indulging in terrorist activity. The apex court also directed the government to set up more foreign national tribunals in Assam to identify the illegal migrants from Bangladesh and deport them back to that country. UNI
