SC Directs MCD To Make Ghazipur Abattoir Fully Functional In Two Weeks 14 Jan 2009, 1600 hrs IST, TIMESOFINDIA.COM NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to make the Ghazipur abattoir functional within two weeks. After a delay of over three years on December 15, 2008, the MCD had announced that the abattoir had become operational. The abattoir is the first of its kind in India, and has been built by using German technology that takes on completely hygienic techniques for processing meat. The entire system is mechanised, ensuring the proper disposal of animal excreta and waste body parts. At the Idgah slaughterhouse, the slaughtering fee was Rs 5 per animal; at the Ghazipur slaughterhouse it would cost Rs 45. In 2005, the Supreme Court directed the MCD to move the Idgah slaughterhouse to Ghazipur. After the BJP came to power in 2007, chairman of the MCD Standing Committee Vijendra Gupta announced that the abattoir would move to Ghazipur in January, 2008. It, however, took the MCD nearly a year to get the slaughterhouse shifted to the new premises. The MCD Commissioner said the delay took place due to the contractor missing the deadline. According to reports, the abattoir has a capacity of slaughtering 1,500 and 3,000 animals through the jhatka and halal methods respectively on a daily basis.
