The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea that sought to stop an investigation into the assets of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and Telugu Desam Party (TD) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The petitioners wanted the apex court to restrain the Andhra Pradesh high court’s order to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Enforcement Directorate and state police to probe allegations that Naidu possessed assets disproportionate to his income.
Eenadu Group owner Ramoji Rao, TPD member of Parliament Nama Nageshwar Rao and C.M. Ramesh, a senior TDP leader, filed the petition in the Supreme Court. They contended that the high court’s order was not valid as it did not give Naidu a chance to be heard.
The high court had passed an ex parte order last week on a petition filed by Y.S. Vijaya Reddy, wife of late Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
“As a court of civil procedure they should show reason for passing an ex parte order. They have not even done that,” said senior advocate Anil Divan, who appeared for the petitioners.
A bench comprising justices Dalveer Bhandari, T.S. Thakur and Dipak Mishra rejected the petition on the grounds that it was premature for the apex court to interfere at this stage.
“This court is not inclined to interfere with the high court’s order. Petitioners are at liberty to return io HC for vacation of order. We direct the HC to hear the matter within 15 days,” said the court’s order.
