SC: False promises can invite legal action
The Supreme Court indicated that legal action can be taken against political parties or elected representatives for not keeping their promises made in the election manifestos to the public during elections. The bench comprising Chief Justice KG Balakrisnan and Justices Arijit Pasayat and P Sathasivam ,however, declined to entertain petition seeking direction to the government to lay down some guidelines to check the menace of political parties making false promises in their election manifestos and forgetting the same immediately after coming to power. The bench while dismissing the petition filed by Tarun Rathi said that this court cannot issue such directions. Justice Pasayat, who retires tomorrow, however, told the council for the petitioner, ‘file a suit for damages for false promises against the political parties or the elected representatives if they do not keep their promises.’ UNI
