Supreme Court has come down heavily on erring police officials who refuse to register FIR’s by issuing notices to all the Director Generals of Police of all states. The Apex court issued notices to all state Directors General of Police to report what actions could be taken against such police officials within three weeks. A bench of Justices B N Aggrawal and G S Singhvi directed the Director Generals of Police (DGsP) and Commissioners of Police to file their response within three week and posted the matter for further hearing to 8th August. The apex court said such a guideline was essential to ensure that the erring officers were prosecuted and sent to jail for neglecting duty. The bench regretted that despite a number of its earlier directions, the police in several cases have been refusing to register FIRs. The bench passed the the order on a habeas corpus petition filed by Bhola Kamat whose 16-year-old daughter who was abducted by some persons in a land dispute. Kamat allegedly filed a complaint with the police who allegedly threatened him to withdraw it enter into a compromise with the accused, including an advocate, Sobha Gupta. "Its a disturbing state of affairs," the bench observed while asking the accused and the Uttar Pradesh police to file their detailed reply on the allegations.
