Madras HC lawyers row: SC orders transfer of 5 police officers New Delhi, Feb 26: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the transfer of five senior police officers whose names have cropped up in connection with the clashes between lawyers and police in the Madras High Court premises and appointed a committee headed by its former judge B N Srikrishna to probe the unprecedented violence. The court at the same time disapproved of the conduct of lawyers in holding meetings and raising of slogans inside the court complex and asked them to call off their strike at the earliest in the interest of the litigants who have been the worst sufferers. "Large number of litigants are the worst sufferers of the strike. This is very sad," a bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivan and J M Panchal said, adding "there should not be any disturbance during court proceedings and there should not be any slogan shouting." The bench, which scrapped a panel set up by the Tamil Nadu government to probe the clash, asked the Srikrishna Committee to "consider immediate actions against the police officers who allowed the entry of police into the High Court" resulting in the alleged police excesses and to submit its interim report within two weeks. The Court made it clear that the five officers were being transferred to facilitate a free and fair inquiry. The Court was informed that Ramasubramanian, Jt Commissioner of Police, was already transferred and another police officer of his rank Sandeep Rai Rathore and three DCPs -- Sarangan, Prem Anand Sinha and Paneer Selvam -- will be immediately shifted.
