A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Supreme Court today seeking directions to the Union Government to evolve a system to ensure safety of Indian students going abroad for studies.
The petition filed by Advocate Ranbir Singh Yadav has urged the apex court to issue directives to the External Affairs Ministry and the HRD Ministry to evolve a mechanism in consultation with the Australian government to ensure safety and security of over 90,000 Indian students studying in that country.
Expressing serious concern over the racial attacks on the Indian students, which also took place in countries like the US and Canada, counsel D K Garg said, in the age of globalisation, such attacks could not be permitted to go unchecked and unpunished.
The petition was likely to be mentioned for urgent hearing before the court within a day or two in view of the increasing racial attacks on Indian students in Australia coupled with the total failure of the Australian government to check them.
