Should be 100 more CBI courts for speedy disposal of corruption cases:CJI

Chief Justice G Balakrishnan said he has recommended to the Prime Minister to open at least 100 more special CBI Courts all over the country for speedy disposal of corruption cases. Delivering the inaugural address at the 53rd anniversary function of the formation of the Kerala High Court, the Chief Justice said he had recommended 3 more CBI Courts in Kerala. Stating cases under Sec 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, relating to dishonouring of cheques, were flooding the courts, the Chief Justice said he had recommended 5 courts should be opened in each district of the country to deal with these cases. Similarly, family courts in the country were getting bogged down with an increasing number of cases being filed every day, he said. In one family court in Thrissur in Kerala, nearly 4,000 cases are pending. It is not possible for a judge to reach a just settlement of a case, which requires mediation, counselling and conciliation among the estranged partners and their relatives. â€˜There should be a maximum of 400 to 500 cases in each family court,â€™ he added. There was also a need for the State Governments to set up more courts to deal with vigilance cases, Chief Justice Balakrishnan said. Also stressing the need for better facilities for the courts, he said some of the munsif courts were functioning in over 100-year-old buildings with scant amenities. Also present at the function were Kerala Chief Justice H L Dattu, senior most judge of the High Court, Justice G B Koshy, Advocate General C P Sudhakara Prasad and senior members of the Bench and Bar.
