The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) chief R K Raghavan today held a closed-door meeting with Gujarat High Court's Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan to discuss setting up of six fast track courts, as per the directives of the apex court, to take up cases of the 2002 riots in the state.

Mr Raghavan, a former CBI chief heading the SIT to re-investigate the 10 major cases of post-Godhra riots of 2002, met Justice Radhakrishnan to discuss the modalities of setting up six fast track courts to expedite the riots-related cases.

High Court sources said the court’s registrar had received the apex court’s order on May 4 to implement its directive. The necessary steps would now be taken for constituting the special courts.

‘We will follow the apex court’s directions and take necessary steps to set up the fast-track courts at the earliest,’ said a senior administrative official.

However, the HC administration didn’t specify the exact date of orders to be issued to set up the courts.

Mr Raghavan, who arrived here today in connection with the SC’s directives, told reporters here that ‘the witnesses protection will be the highest priority during the trial of the riots cases and all those who will be deposing before the courts will be getting adequate protection and they need not fear anybody.’ He said they would soon chalk out a detailed plan to protect the witnesses.
