US Riots - That siege the US capitol

President – elect Joe Biden will be sworn in as the next US President on January 20, 2021 in front of the famous US capitol building but before that an interesting rather horrific events took place which caused havoc in the Capitol in Washington DC. 

WHY IS THE AREA SURROUNDING THE CAPITOL BUILDING SO IMPORTANT? 

• The Capitol Hill is an area situated in Washington DC which is the capital of the United States where the Congress is situated.

• A place where the US government debates, writes and passes the laws 

• It is where the elected officials in senate and the House of Representatives sit, making up the lower and upper Chambers of the Congress.

• The US Capitol Building was the main location were the protests broke out. 

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE US CAPITOL? 

• President Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building where the US Congress sits.

• Inside, the Lawmakers were holding a joint session to certify electoral college votes to confirm Joe Biden as the next US President. 

• The unprecedented event saw thousands of protestors breach Capitol Hill security leading to 5 reported deaths and a dozen of arrests, while many injured.  

WHAT TRIGGERED THE ATTACKS AND THE CHAIN OF EVENTS WHICH LED TO THE SIEGE? 

• Ahead of congress meeting to certify the presidential vote President Trump called on his supporters via a series of tweets to head to Washington DC for a rally. 

• On Wednesday morning the crowds was growing outside the Capitol Building for a march not far from white house to protest for President Trump’s November election defeat.

• Around noon Trump came out to speak to his supporters outside the White House. 

• By noon there were thousands of protestors and some of them broke through the barriers and went inside the building for which the police were initially unprepared.

• As the crowed marched inside the Capitol Building the entire capital went into lockdown. 

• This chaos led to the congress lawmakers to stop certifying the votes. 

• The police did retaliate in order to manage the out numbered protestors with tear gas, water canons, also at one point shots fired which led to a woman’s death.  

• By noon, the mayor of Washington DC announced curfew. 

• However  on 7th January, 2021 in the early hours of Thursday morning the lawmakers certified Joe Biden as president elect. 

HOW DID THE WORLD LEADERS REACT?

• UK Prime Minister- Boris Johnson 

‘He condemned people that encourage to behave in a “disgraceful manner” while mentioning that what the President did and said was completely wrong’.

• Indian Prime Minister – Narendra Modi 

‘He condemned the violence and said he was “distressed” and that the transfer of power must be in order and should have been peacefully done also the democratic process shouldn’t be damaged through unlawful protests’.
