Agricultural land in gift

Dear Sir,

My brother in law is having agricultural land nerar by kokan area ( Maharashtra) of 10 acare. Dut to his health problem currently he is not doing any farming  on this land .also i have helped him during his illness as well as given money for his other needs. Now the land is empty and i am interested to make farming on the same land.

My brother in law advice me to take as a gift and do farming . Can this type of transaction is legal for me. as i have to put my name on 7/12 abstract also advice if any extra stamp duty i have to pay for this.

Gift can be executed through love and affection and in the blood relations.  Since he is your brother in law , you may opt for a registered sale deed.  Stamp duty  will be calculated as per ready reckoner issued by State Govt.
