Definition of industry

as per section 2j of Industrial Disputes Act, 1947

'Industry means any business, trade, undertaking, manufacture or calling of employers and includes.........................................'

 

What does calling of emplyers here means?

Employers means legal entity that controls and directs a servant or worker under an express or implied contract of employment and pays (or is obligated to pay) him or her salary or wages in compensation.

Let me specify that though the definition of industry is cited by you, a landmark judgement of Bangalore Water supply swereage board, has laid down the principles that govern the test of an industry under Industrial disputes act, and they are as under :

 

1.Systematic acitivty

2. Performed in cooperation with employees

3 To satisfy public demands

This has taken in its sweep large chunk of activity carried out which satisfy these 3 tests to be an industry.
