Question regarding intellactual property attached to an appl

Just came to know about this site while i was doing some research on Intellactual property stuff. I am Adnan , a software deveoper from India. A noob when it comes to software development. I have a concept to build an iPhone
application that will help cut sms costs by replacing it with push notifications. User base is expected to be 2-3 million. I am quite unclear about the legal things you need to take care of while selling the applciation to a client. Does it have to do with an intellactual property right in this case? Does an intellactual property right protect the concept or idea of an application? Any help of yours would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

if it is an innovation then you can get it patented.
