Domestic violence and threatening

My friend, a Christian woman, was married into a Hindu family without any dowry. She endured physical and emotional abuse from her husband and father-in-law. After having a child, she pursued higher education in the UK, funded by her father-in-law, but her husband accompanied her and continued his torment, forbidding her from working. Following her return to India, she emailed the women's cell, detailing her suffering, but received a lukewarm response. Now, her husband and family are threatening her, demanding 24 lakhs, claiming it's repayment, and warning of harm to her family.

How to move legally? Does she have to pay the money ?

She can file a complaint with the local police for the persisting threats and dowry demand even though they are claiming only the amount spent on her.

There is no necessity for her to return the amount given by her father in law to pursue her education at UK especially in the absence of any contract or agreement between both

She can follow it up through police and also can think about filing domestic violence case seeking protection s well as compensation for the tortures they have meted out to her so far.

No.  She can file a case against them for abusing her and demanding the dowry.  Consult a local advocate.

It is advisable to settle the issue amicably within the family and may avoid legal remedy, which is bound to spoil married life.
