JNPT felicitates top performers of 2009-10 at anniversary fete
- N. N. Kumar releases Exim India’s Special Issue
- Concept paper to turn JNP into green port getting ready
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) celebrated its 21st anniversary (which falls on May 26) here on January 4 by felicitating its top performers (see box on page 24) in 2009-10.
It might be recalled that the Port had achieved its highest-ever 4.061 million TEUs and 60.75 million tonnes throughput during the fiscal.
The occasion also saw the release of Exim India’s Special Issue on JN Port by the Chairman In-Charge, Mr N. N. Kumar, marking the 21st anniversary and best-ever cargo handling.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kumar said that at 21 years the Port had become mature and had a bright future ahead because of its major development plans, including the 330-metre standalone terminal, 4th box and marine chemical terminal, deepening and widening of the Mumbai harbour and JN Port channels, integrated truck parking plaza and Port-based special economic zone (SEZ).
JN Port was also taking steps towards becoming India’s first green port, for which it would shortly be submitting a concept paper to the government, he revealed.
It was also committed to social causes, such as giving land and jobs to the project-affected persons, Mr Kumar stressed.
Earlier, Mr S. K. Kaul, Chief Manager (Administration) and Secretary, JNPT, in his welcome address, said that after a difficult 2008-09, JN Port was back to what it does best—achieving new performance landmarks.
This was made possible, he stressed, due to the efforts of each and every one of the Port's management, officers, labour and, importantly, users.
He made a special mention of the contribution made by the previous Chairman, Mr S. S. Hussain, "whose leadership saw the Port through the period of the recession. Now, with Mr Neeraj Kumar at the helm, I am sure that JN Port will soar to even greater heights of glory".
He pointed out that the primary factor for the Port’s success over the years has been its users/customers and private terminals. "This year too they have been instrumental in the Port achieving a new high in cargo handling," he emphasised.
The event saw participation from a cross-section of the trade and current and former officials from the maritime bureaucracy.
