Marking of exhibits by Court in a criminal proceedings

Can a presiding officer of a Court while examination chief is going on call for papers and mark certain portions of photo copy / original (two to three set of documents), and mark as a prosecution document?

I would like learned Judicial / Retired Officers, eminent juriststs and senior legal experts clarify and are there any judicial precedents or judicial decisions on the suject.  I shall be grateful if I am supplied with well considered clarification.
