Marriage expenses - dowry?

Respected Members,

I'm currently facing multiple litigation and cases initiated by my estranged wife. All the cases/complaints are false only targeted to harass me and my family. While dealing with 498a, I have two questions to clariify-

1. Does marriage expense (including shagun during ceremonies etc.) fall under the purview of Dowry? Can you please point me to any case law or other literature?

2. If asking for marriage function in groom's city or in certain way mounts to the demand of dowry? Again, directions to any case law or literature on this would be really appreciated.

  1. Marriage expenses and gifts are not dowry. This is well settled law.
  2. Wives usually quote huge marriage expenses simply to paint husband in bad light as greedy and put pressure for larger settlement.
