Govt must have given adequate time by publishing such notification of acquisition and also issued notices to the concerned owners and in all probability, this is not a sudden step, as acquiring is a big process. Unless such notices are given and compensation is paid or deposited with Revenue officials, designated authority, Govt can not acquire the land. Certainly, you are not alone the loser and there may be many. Consult local advocate for further remedy.

Until there is a notice issued by the competent authority notifying the land to be acquired for this purpose, they cannot acquire yor land for road widening or anything.
if they still go ahead wit their plans, you may file a suit for permanent injunction restraining them from acquiring your land without making proper compensation as per provisions of law.
