Surrender in 125a, what next

Dear Experts, I need very urgent advise. My brother has surrendered in the court yesterday after fighting for 3 plus years accused under Section 125 cprc. He is unemployed and has no assets on his name. His lawyer had advised him if he surrender in the court, he doesn't have to pay the the maintenance, the arrear will also go to zero. His wife is graduated , more educated than him. She left home less than three months, without giving us any reason. They have no kids together. She was working after marriage too, but in her petition she showed no job recently. She never appeared for court dates, except her father. The girl was married before, our lawyer requested for her previous marriage and reason for the divorce, but they didn't give us no information and court didn't help us either. My mother is old and sick. Since my brother is in prison, she is alone at home. We do not have money to pay maintenance. Period. What should we expect in such case. Please advise. Thank you.
