The Supreme Court will hear on 26th August the petitions from all over the country challenging setting up of special economic zones on agriculture land. A bench headed by Justice CK Thakker on Tuesday deferred the hearing till 26th August as the Centre, Haryana, Gujarat, West Bengal and Rajasthan had failed to file their replies. Only few parties including the Uttar Pradesh governmnet and the Government of National Capital Region had filed replies. Besides, it said that the bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan will hear the matter as earlier orders were passed by it. Earlier, the apex court had transferred to itself all the petitions against setting up of SEZs pending before various high courts for the final hearing on 19th August. The apex court on 5th December, 2006 had sought replies on a PIL filed by Haryana Janhit Congress leader Kuldip Bishnoi alleging that the proposals to set up 60-odd SEZs, including acquisition of 25,000 acres of land by Haryana government in favour the Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries in the National Capital Region, were illegal. With the PIL, the court will also hear on 26th August the plea against acquisition of 2,100 acres of land for setting up a thermal power station by Anil Ambani Group company Reliance Energy in Uttar Pradesh at the cost of Rs 10,000 crore. Besides, another petition filed by Mukesh Ambani group's Reliance Ventures seeking transfer of the cases pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging land acquisitions will also be decided. The bench will also hear yet another petition filed by Noida Global SEZ Pvt Ltd and Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Energy Ltd seeking transfer of a petition filed by Sohan Pal Sharma challenging acquisition of land by the company for setting up of a SEZ in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
