Ramoowalia demands action against cheat NRI groom
MANSA: Concerned over no efforts being made to arrest a cheat groom, having duped a Mansa girl in the name of getting her to Canada after marriage, former union minister and Lok Bhalai Party chief Balwant Singh Ramoowalia on Tuesday sat on dharna at the district administrative complex. He also demanded action against a Chandigarh- based woman superintendent of police (SP) for sitting on the inquiry against the groom and his family despite the Mansa police booking the woman`s husband, his parents and one more relative six months ago.
The Mansa SSP, Hardyal Singh Mann, on the other hand said the groom`s mother and another relative have been arrested. He added that dowry items excluding cash have also been recovered and a lookout notice have been issued against the woman`s husband, Rakesh Kumar and his father, to arrest them whenever they reached India. He informed as a challan was presented in this case at the local court in Mansa, the matter was sub-judice. The accused had got the stay orders regarding their arrest from the Mansa court, which ordered that the matter be probed by the internal vigilance cell in Chandigarh.
Ramoowalia, who presented the duped girl, Anita, of village Aklia to the media at the dharna site said, "Her Canada-based husband not only cheated her but also made her family spend Rs 22 lakh on the marriage and for arranging for her visa. The girl's husband, Rakesh, has refused to take her along even after allegedly taking a big amount from her father, Vijay Kumar."
Vijay Kumar, accompanying Ramoowalia said he had spent Rs 12 lakh on the marriage of his daughter in February 2009 and then again gave Rs 10 lakh to his son-in-law`s family, as they had demanded the amount for sponsoring his daughter's case. Despite this, Anita was not taken to Canada, he said. Anita, with tears rolling down her cheeks, while narrating her woes said her husband is from Bhaini village in Ludhiana district. He had been promising her to get her to Canada but after getting the money, he refused, she said.
Ramoowalia said when Anita's husband refused to take her to Canada, Vijay Kumar approached the Mansa police, which registered a case against the groom and his 3 family members but "in the name of further inquiry," a woman officer in the internal vigilance cell in Chandigarh had allegedly weakened the case by dropping the names of three persons in the case and only kept the name of Anita's husband. Demanding stern action against the woman police official, Ramoowalia alleged that she had tried to handover the passport to the groom` s mother to escape.
Ramoowalia said if the state government was serious in saving girls from sham marriages, it should take prompt action in such cases. He also slammed the government for not doing much to stop rising unemployment, crimes and drug abuse in the state.
SSP HS Mann said even though the girl`s family is alleging that a Chandigarh police official could have tried to help the groom`s family but the Mansa police had confiscated the passports of the groom`s mother and another arrested relative.
