Company changes and reemployment

Hello,

Had a query, the company that I'm with for the past 5+ years have changed their entity thrice already, meaning the company underwent a change in management similar to a takeover, but with the same staff and leaders. The last joining letter from the company states my gratuity from the previous companies have been forwarded to the current company. However some of my coworkers left the company last month and they were told they won't be getting their gratuity. Can the company say that? Even when we have in the offer letter that the grauity from previous company has been forwarded? Or did the company just take advantage of us, knowing they won't have to pay the gratuity even if its explicitly mentioned in the joining letter? Please advice how to deal with this, I'm very much worried as i was counting on this gratuity as savings
