Under the rule of “unity of invention” every application for a patent shall relate to one invention only or to a group of inventions so linked as to form a single inventive concept. If an application for patent recites more than one distinct invention, the application suffers from lack of unity of invention, and the applicant will be asked to file so many divisionals as are distinct inventions. A divisional cannot add extra subject matter and hence can claim the priority of its parent application.
